Just bought your first cycle? Here are 10 essential accessories, from helmets and lights to locks and pumps, that make every ride safer and easier.
Buying the cycle is the exciting part. But a few small accessories decide whether your rides are safe, comfortable and hassle-free. If you are just starting out, this is the list to work through.
1. Helmet
Your most important accessory. Pick one that fits well and carries a recognized safety standard.
2. Front light
A white front light helps you see the road and helps others see you. It is useful at dusk and on poorly lit roads, and even in daytime it improves visibility.
3. Rear light
A red rear light makes you visible to traffic behind you. Many have a blinking mode, which stands out better. Browse our bicycle lights.

4. Bell
A simple bell is the friendliest way to tell pedestrians and other riders you’re coming. It is small, inexpensive and often overlooked. See our bicycle bells.
5. Lock
Even a short stop at a shop needs a lock. Choose a sturdy U-lock or chain lock rather than a thin cable. Whenever you can, lock the frame and a wheel to something fixed. Compare options in our bicycle locks.
6. Pump
Tyres lose air gradually, so check them regularly. The ideal pressure is printed on the tyre sidewall. A floor pump is best for home, and a compact pump is handy for the road. Explore our bicycle pumps.
7. Puncture repair kit and saddle bag
A flat tyre is the most common problem you will meet. A small saddle bag with a patch kit, tyre levers and a spare tube lets you fix it yourself. See our saddle bags.

8. Chain lubricant and basic bike care
A little regular care keeps your cycle running smoothly and quietly. Wipe the chain, apply lube and keep the drivetrain clean. Check out our bike care range.

9. Water bottle and bottle cage
Staying hydrated matters even on short rides. A bottle cage keeps water within easy reach without stopping. See our bottles and bottle cages.

10. Cycling gloves
Gloves cushion your palms, improve grip and protect your hands if you fall. They make a real difference on longer rides. Browse our cycling gloves.
If you can’t buy everything at once, start with these four: helmet, lights, lock and pump. They cover safety, security and the most common roadside problem. Add the rest as you ride more.
